Jeff Rian, The Hippie Drawings -The Richard Prince Purple Book. Janvier, Purple Institute, Oliver Zahm, 2005

This extraordinary book allows the reader to discover a new side of Richard Prince's oeuvre. There are no smoking cowboys swinging their lassoes or bare-breasted blondes on heavy motorcycles in this droll collection of highly expressive drawings and watercolors, whose inventive shapes and joyful colors recall children's drawings or paintings by the mentally ill. Half-figures of indeterminable gender with staring eyes, big ears, and frizzy hair challengingly smirk at the viewer and become an inventory of possibilities that later find their way into the joke paintings of the same period. This lavishly printed publication presents these apparently funny, yet sinister works to a larger public for the first time.

Yûichi Yokoyama, La Terre de Glace, éditions matière, 2018

Trois personnages — hommes ? robots ? extraterrestres ? mutants ?

Emmett Williams, The Voyage, edition hansjörg mayer, 1975

One of Williams’ lesser known and more rare artists’ books in which he explores the mechanics of concrete poetry utilizing three-character words mathematically arranged within the constraints of a ten-by-ten grid. The content of the book is printed on the recto side only and can be read page by page, or in a more cinematic manner through flipping the pages. Either way, the writing as well as the execution of this book is a true voyage conceptually punctuated by the grid which gets smaller and smaller with each page ultimately fading away into the horizon. A handsomely designed and interactive book, much like Williams’ other work.

Bernadette Corporation, Reena Spaulings. A novel by Bernadette Corporation, Semiotext(e), 2004

Set in post-9/11 New York City, Reena Spaulings was written by a large collective of writers and artists that bills itself as The Bernadette Corporation. Like most contemporary fiction, Reena Spaulings is about a female twenty-something. Reena is discovered while working as a museum guard and becomes a rich international supermodel. Meanwhile, a bout of terrible weather seizes New York, leaving in its wake a strange form of civil disobedience that stirs its citizens to mount a musical song-and-dance riot called "Battle on Broadway."

Fashioned in the old Hollywood manner by a legion of professional and amateur writers striving to achieve the ultimate blockbuster, the musical ends up being about a nobody who could be anybody becoming a somebody for everybody. The result is generic and perfect—not unlike Reena Spaulings itself, whose many authors create a story in which New York itself strives to become the ultimate collective experiment in which the only thing shared is the lack of uniqueness.

Tarik Hayward, Indian Inkjet, Oraibi, Mcb-a, 2018

--

Produced for the Neutral Density art show at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne in 2017, Indian Inkjet is the result of the one-year process to produce a book - from its conception to its printing - by the artist himself. Every copy is a unique item made in an autonomous printing house set up in the workshop. Thanks to hacked software, the artist hijacked printers from their planned obsolescence, feeding them with tubes dipped in cans of ink.

Born in Ibiza, Tarik Hayward lives in la Vallée de Joux. He conceives his work as « a series of technical experiments made in the urgency of an undefined need ».

Coll., Maximage Color Combinations, ECAL, 2017

This book is a tool for designers, artists and printers who are interested in personalized and unique color palettes. Created using between 2 and 5 spot colors, over 120 combinations were generated directly in the offset press by interfering with the ink unit. This unorthodox color-mixing technique helped to create more than 450 spot colors evolving over the 500 different books, turning each one into a set of totally unique combinations.

The book explores how different colors and hues can interact together, and how they can merge from one to another. Without any chapters or formulas, colors travel from shiny to matte, blue to celadon, frozen to boiling, reflective to absorbent, dark light to brain grey, spectral to metameric, sunshine to neon, from Atlanta to Albertville, or from Leipzig to Juba via Napoli and back again, in an attempt to tell infinite stories.

The user will not find here this year’s hot color nor the trends for next season. Rather, each page tells a different story that each user can relate to, reinterpret or reappropriate in their own way.

This publication follows “Maximage Formula Guide” and “Maximage Raster Guide”, and is part of the “Workflow” Research Project (R&D). It was conceived and printed during a workshop at ECAL held by Maximage and the printer Thomi Wolfensberger, Zurich.

Lous Martens, Animal Books for Jaap Zeno Anna Julian Luca, Roma Publications, 2017

Lous Martens about the book: "Seventeen years ago our grandson Jaap was born. That was the start of an animal book for Jaap. I used a dummy for the OASE journal of architecture and loosely pasted in pictures of animals that I had clipped from newspapers and magazines about art, literature and science. Plus stamps and photos from advertising brochures. Then Zeno was born and the same thing happened: an animal book for Zeno. Now I was working on two books at once. Then came Anna. Julian. Luca. At this point, there were five books-in-the-making on the table. And none of those five are finished yet. The children, as well as myself, enjoy seeing the small, ever-evolving changes. The additions. These books were never intended for the outside world where I had found all the pictures. Never intended to be published. Now they lie here, grouped into one big book, because others have convinced me it’s what they deserve."
